Looking for printer-shopping advice

Journal entry
November 23, 2005

The girlfriend and I are looking at buying a new printer. Our main criteria is that the printer must be usable from both Windows and OS X (and deliver nice quality prints, obviously). Things that would be nice in addition to that:

  • Network connectivity, so we don’t have to have one of the PCs turned on to print from the iBook
  • Color printing. Needs to have separate color/black cartridges in that case.
  • Scanning ability

Any recommendations?

Update: We bought a Brother

I have the HP 7410 and it's a multi-function colorjet printer/fax/scanner/copier/kitchen sink

I have it setup on my wireless network and it works great in my mixed computer environment. Sometimes I do have trouble scanning, but that's because I turned the printer on after my computers were already booted. I can fix it by bringing up the HP setup dialog on my PowerBook (1-2 minutes), I'll be able to scan.

Jakob, drop me an email if you want to ask me any detailed questions. I can take photos too if you want.

The 7310 is a bit cheaper but does not have wifi capability...but can does have network.

7410 - $419
7310 - $349

Thanks! I'll check it out. I'm afraid it's a bit too expensive for our needs though.
